Basic information about the aim and objectives of Organisation

Mission Statement :

Improving the world using abandoned technology, making full use of every resource.

Objectives :

To help nonprofit, NGO, and small businesses in developing countries to grow and organize by providing low-cost SMS and mobile communication technology.

Research into how to make this technology as low-cost, easy, and intuative as possible. Taking advantage of every possible resource by deploying open-source solutions on seemingly obsolete technology that most of the world sees as useless. To breathe new life into technology and hardware.

Areas of Expertise :

Web development/programming, SMS, WAP, mobile internet, Linux and open source on old hardware.
Brief description about the work of Organisation

Research & Publication : Yes
Campaigning / Advocacy : No
Capacity Development / Networking : Yes
Operational : Yes
Funding / Resourcing : No
Brief Description of Activities :

I created an SMS -> Internet/blogging gateway using open source software and a computer that was thrown away.

At first I expected just casual use from travelers to update their blogs in places without internet. Later, however, I noticed a journalist in Sri Lanka using it to power his newsire business/service.

It was inspiring to see "junk" turned into something that could change lives somewhere else. It is this principle that guides the work I try to do.

Geographic Location of Activities :

The one-man operation is hosted in my home in the United States with the webserver also in the USA.

Users, however, are dispersed throughout the world with the most success seen in Sri Lanka.
