This panel would look at the role of communication in conflict resolution and building peace (by facilitating negotiations, increasing transparency and developing/fostering trust among communities). It would illustrate the wide and varying areas ICT for Peace encompasses in relation to armed conflict, including conflict prevention and management; peace operations; humanitarian relief and disaster assistance; and post-conflict peace building and reconstruction.

The panel discussion will bring together those with experiences to share in peace building through the use of media/communication. Multimedia presentations will form the basis for an open forum discussion on the role of media in peace building. This will include looking at the opportunities, challenges and ethical dimensions of using ICTs (especially mainstream media) as a catalyst for peace building among communities and achieving a meaningful reconciliation in situations of conflict. Very importantly, it will also look at the need for a pro-active approach to peace building that seeks to prevent situations of conflict from escalating to violence.
